Hiking and Rappelling in Salto del Chintaguay

The gorges of the Atacama Desert offer a unique experience. This tour features a trek through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge, complemented by a rappelling activity.

Hiking and Rappelling in Salto del Chintaguay

Guests will be picked up at their chosen time from their hotel in Pica and transported in a 4x4 vehicle to the Salto del Chintaguay. This gorge, located in the Tamarugal Pampa in the Atacama Desert, offers captivating scenery.

The tour begins with a drive to the summit of a hill for panoramic views of the Atacama Desert. Following this, participants will embark on a medium-difficulty trek through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge, covering approximately 2 kilometers (1.25 miles).

The hike includes an ascent of 70 meters (230 feet) to a viewpoint for scenic vistas. A break will allow for a snack of an energy bar, chocolate, nuts, and fruit, with a choice of tea or coffee available. The trek continues along the ravine edge, viewing pictograms from pre-Columbian times.

Finally, the group will return to the starting point and then travel back to the hotel in Pica, arriving four hours after pickup.

Add a Rappelling Experience

For an enhanced experience, there is an option for rappelling in the Salto del Chintaguay. This includes completing the trekking route followed by a 7-meter (23 feet) rappel.

After the descent, a brief walk along the ravine will precede another rappelling activity of 5 meters (16.5 feet). Participants will then view the pre-Columbian pictographs of the gorge and return to their hotel in Pica five hours after pickup.
