Hiking and Rappelling in Salto del Chintaguay

The gorges of the Atacama Desert are breathtaking. You'll discover one of the most spectacular on this trekking route through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge

  • 4 - 5 hours

The stunning gorges of the Atacama Desert offer an extraordinary experience. On this trekking adventure, you will explore one of the most remarkable sites: the Salto del Chintaguay gorge, which also includes an exhilarating rappelling activity.

Trekking and Rappelling in Salto del Chintaguay

Your journey begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Pica, where you will board a 4x4 vehicle that will transport you to the Salto del Chintaguay. Nestled in the heart of the Atacama Desert within the Tamarugal Pampa, this gorge promises to leave a lasting impression.

Initially, we will ascend a hill in the 4x4 to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Atacama Desert. After soaking in the scenery, we will embark on a trek through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge. This medium-difficulty trek covers approximately 2 kilometers (1.25 miles).

The ascent of 70 meters (230 feet) will lead us to a viewpoint that showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Salto del Chintaguay gorge. At this point, we will take a break to enjoy a snack consisting of an energy bar, chocolate, nuts, and fruit. For drinks, you can choose between tea or coffee.

Once rejuvenated, we will proceed with our hike along the gorge's rim. During the walk, we will encounter numerous pictographs from pre-Columbian times, adding a layer of intrigue as we attempt to interpret their meanings.

Concluding our trek, we will return to our starting point and take the 4x4 back to your hotel in Pica, arriving approximately four hours after the initial pick-up.

Enhance Your Adventure with Rappelling

For those seeking to elevate their adventure, we suggest opting for the package that includes rappelling at the Salto del Chintaguay. This experience begins with the trekking route, followed by a thrilling descent of 7 meters (23 feet).

After the initial rappel, we will have a short walk along the ravine's edge before engaging in another rappel descent, this time of 5 meters (16.5 feet). We will conclude our experience by admiring the pre-Columbian pictographs found within the gorge, before returning to your hotel in Pica approximately five hours after the pick-up.
