Matera Day Trip

After meeting at the designated point, we will travel by bus to Matera. Upon arrival, we will begin a guided tour of its historic center, known as one of the oldest in the world. The Sassi districts, carved into the Murgia Materana, have been inhabited since the Paleolithic era.

We will explore the neighborhoods of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, examining key areas of this World Heritage City and discussing its historical evolution, including the 1950s displacements mandated by the Italian government.

During the tour, we will view several notable Baroque temples, including the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, the Church of Santa Chiara, and the Matera Cathedral, which is in Apulian Romanesque style.

After a break for lunch on your own, participants may access some of the rock churches of Matera (not included), such as the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, or Church of San Pietro Barisano.

At the end of the excursion to Matera, we will return by bus, concluding a twelve-hour tour.
