Lagoa do Fogo is Sao Miguel Island's greatest natural attraction. You can't miss out on the chance to hike to this breathtaking volcanic lagoon- it's a must-see!
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and hop on a minibus to head towards the west side of the island. From there, we'll start hiking to reach the most iconic landmark on the island of Sao Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo.
In total, we'll tackle a 7.5-mile (12-km) trail that will guide us to a lake located on the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. During this hiking tour, we'll traverse eucalyptus forests and discuss the vegetation and wildlife present in the forests on the Azores. Some of the plants that we'll find along the way are native to distant lands such as New Zealand.
Halfway through, we'll reach a levada that leads to the very edge of Lagoa do Fogo, where impressive views await you. Additionally, you'll have a perfect view of the village of Vila Franca do Campo and its famous islet.
The lagoon shore will be the ideal spot to relax and enjoy a well-deserved picnic lunch. After a refreshing lunch, we'll begin our descent through an area of pastures and vegetation.
On the way to Ponta Delgada, we'll stop at Agua D'Alto beach before returning to the starting point, concluding our 7-hour tour.
