Lagoa do Fogo Hiking Tour

Description

At the indicated time, we will meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and board a minibus to the west side of the island. From there, we will begin a hike to reach the most iconic landmark on the island of Sao Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo.

We will tackle a 7.5-mile (12-km) trail that will guide us to a lake located on the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. During this hiking tour, we will traverse eucalyptus forests and discuss the vegetation and wildlife present in the forests of the Azores. Some plants encountered are native to regions such as New Zealand.

Halfway through, we will reach a levada that leads to the edge of Lagoa do Fogo, offering views of the volcanic lagoon and the village of Vila Franca do Campo with its famous islet.

The lagoon shore will provide an opportunity to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, we will begin our descent through an area of pastures and vegetation.

On our way back to Ponta Delgada, we will stop at Agua D'Alto beach. Finally, we will return to the starting point. The tour lasts approximately 7 hours.
