Lagoa do Fogo is Sao Miguel Island's main natural attraction. Hiking to this volcanic lagoon is essential.
Description
At the designated time, we will meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and take a minibus to the west side of the island. We will then begin our hike to the iconic landmark: Lagoa do Fogo.
The hike covers a total of 7.5 miles (12 km) leading to a lake situated in the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. Along the route, we will navigate eucalyptus forests and discuss the local flora and fauna. Some native plants are from distant regions, including New Zealand.
Midway, we will arrive at a levada that offers views of Lagoa do Fogo and allows for spectacular sights of the lagoon. You'll also see the village of Vila Franca do Campo and its well-known islet.
The lagoon shore is an ideal spot for a picnic lunch. After lunch, we will begin our descent through pastures and vegetation.
On our return to Ponta Delgada, we will stop at Agua D'Alto beach before concluding the tour. We will return to the starting point after 7 hours of touring.
