Description
We will gather at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada at the scheduled time, where a minibus will transport us to the western part of the island. This marks the beginning of our hike towards the most celebrated site of Sao Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo.
The journey encompasses a 7.5-mile (12-km) trail that leads us to a lake nestled within the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. Throughout our hike, we will navigate through eucalyptus forests and learn about the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in the Azores' woodlands. Expect to encounter plants that originate from distant regions, including species exclusive to New Zealand.
As we approach the midpoint, we’ll arrive at a levada that offers a breathtaking glimpse of Lagoa do Fogo. The panoramic views of this spectacular volcanic lagoon will surely captivate you, complemented by an excellent vista of the picturesque village of Vila Franca do Campo and its renowned islet.
The shoreline of the lagoon provides an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy a much-deserved picnic lunch. Following our revitalizing meal, we’ll begin our descent through lush pastures and vibrant vegetation.
On our return journey to Ponta Delgada, we will make a stop at the delightful Agua D'Alto beach to conclude our adventure. Finally, we will return to our initial meeting point, where we’ll conclude this 7-hour exploration.
