Lagoa do Fogo is Sao Miguel Island's greatest natural attraction. You can't miss out on the chance to hike to this breathtaking volcanic lagoon - it's a must-see!
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and board a minibus to the west side of the island. There, we'll begin our hike to the most iconic landmark on São Miguel: Lagoa do Fogo.
We will cover a total of 7.5 miles (12 km) on a trail leading to a lake located in the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. During the hike, we will pass through eucalyptus forests and discuss the local vegetation and wildlife in the Azores. Some of the plants encountered are native to distant regions such as New Zealand.
Halfway through, we will reach a levada that leads to the edge of Lagoa do Fogo, offering stunning views of the volcanic lagoon. You will also have a clear view of the village of Vila Franca do Campo and its famous islet.
The lagoon shore will provide an ideal spot for a picnic lunch. After the break, we will start our descent through pastures and vegetation.
On our return to Ponta Delgada, we will stop at Agua D'Alto beach before concluding our tour. Finally, we will return to the starting point after 7 hours of exploring.
