5-Day Hiking Adventure at Nevado del Huila
Day 1: Arrival in Belalcázar
Your journey begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Popayán at 1 PM, followed by an approximate five-hour drive to Belalcázar. Upon arrival, you'll check into your accommodation, and you'll have the remainder of the day to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Trekking to Nevado del Huila
Awakening early, we'll set off on our trekking journey towards the Nevado del Huila volcano.
Our first stop is the indigenous reserve of Caloto Wila, situated at an elevation of 2100 meters (6889 feet). Here, you'll have the chance to interact with the local community, primarily composed of the Nasa ethnic group. After enjoying a traditional breakfast in the village, we will commence our hike at 8 AM to a location known as Dublin, which serves as the final access point by vehicle. This is where our true hiking adventure begins!
Continuing our journey, we’ll traverse the north slope of the Nevado del Huila volcano until we reach a moor, where we will establish our camp for the night at an altitude of 3600 meters (11811 feet).
Day 3: Ascending Nevado del Huila
The day starts at 6 AM with a hearty breakfast. We will take a challenging mountain path for our second day as we continue our ascent. By midday, we expect to arrive at Las Torres, the designated monitoring zone of the volcano, where we will camp overnight.
Day 4: Summit Day at Nevado del Huila
After breakfast, we will set our sights on reaching the highest point of the Nevado del Huila volcano at 4800 meters (15748 feet).
Adventurous participants can attempt to reach the summit, which requires previous climbing experience and specialized gear including ice axes, crampons, and harnesses. For those choosing not to summit, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas of the volcano and its glacier, ensuring a memorable experience.
In the afternoon, we begin our descent back to base camp, where a delicious dinner awaits.
Day 5: Return to Belalcázar
On our final day, we will descend to Dublin, where our vehicle will be ready to take us back to Caloto Wila. After lunch and sharing stories from our trek, we will continue our journey back to Belalcázar.
To conclude this exhilarating 5-day adventure, we will stop in Tóez for a relaxing thermal bath in its natural pools. The tour will conclude around 6 PM in Belalcázar.
