Tierradentro National Archaeological Park Tour
Pickup is at 5 am at your hotel in Popayán for this full-day excursion. We will travel to the National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro, one of Cauca's key archaeological sites, with an initial stop for breakfast in the village of Inzá.
Upon arrival, we will explore the park, which showcases three historical periods: pre-Hispanic, colonial, and republican. The tour includes pyramids and hypogea, underground tombs excavated in volcanic rock, some reaching a depth of 8 metres (26 feet). We will also learn about the Paez people, prior to Spanish arrival.
After the tombs, we will view indigenous stone statues shaped like animals and visit the museum housing artifacts from the excavations. At midday, a lunch will be provided featuring chicken or meat with rice, soup, salad, 'patacones', and a drink.
In the afternoon, we will visit the San Andrés de Pisimbalá church, a colonial structure made of stone with a thatched roof. The tour concludes with a return to Popayán, dropping off participants at their hotel between 8 pm and 9 pm.
