Excursion to Jesuit Missions

Upon your reservation, you can opt for one of two distinct alternatives. Both journeys commence with hotel pick-up in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and span a total of 13 hours.

Day Trip to San Javier & Concepción

Your adventure kicks off at 7 am, as we set off towards the towns of Cotoca, Pailas, Paillón, and Los Troncos, which hold significant historical importance linked to the Bolivian Jesuit Missions.

Throughout the drive, you'll discover insights about these reductions. Established in the late 17th century with the aim of spreading Christianity in the New World, these sites remain remarkably preserved. As a result, Bolivia boasts six towns designated as World Heritage Sites.

Arriving around 11:30 am at San Javier, founded in 1691, we will take a tour of this mission, the oldest among Bolivia’s Jesuit settlements, and visit the Mission Museum. Following this exploration, we'll continue to Concepción, where a traditional lunch awaits.

Post-lunch, we'll wander through this 18th-century gem and observe the various art and craft workshops, where local Chiquitanos produce traditional items that sustain the missions' economy.

Day Trip to San José

Beginning at 7:30 am, we will head towards the Jesuit Mission of San José. After a scenic four-hour drive across the picturesque Bolivian landscape, we'll reach this historic church. During our visit, we will explore the church and the accompanying museum.

Following our exploration, we will enjoy a traditional meal before heading to Santa Cruz la Vieja. We will stop at a viewpoint that offers stunning vistas of the Chiquitano Valley. Our final stop will be at a local handicraft center, where you will gain insights into the artisanship of the community.
