Travel around the twitcher’s paradise of Ria Formosa in a quick and convenient Segway. These two-wheeled electric vehicles rely on the user’s balance for propulsion and are the most enjoyable and environmentally friendly way to explore the national park without missing a bird.
Part of the Natura 2000 network of specially protected sites and long thought of as an Important Bird Area (IBA), Ria Formosa is a vitally important habitat for aquatic birds. Its inclusion in the prestigious Ramsar Convention reflects its international importance as a wetland conservation area. The shallow waters and coastal lagoons provide a home for 200 different species and a stopover point for over 20,000 birds during the winter season. Make the most of this site, worthwhile at any time of year for its huge significance in the bird-watching world. Typical Mediterranean species abound along with resident and migratory breeding species. The Greater Flamingo can be spotted all year round, and watch out for the Purple Swamp Hen, whose amazing recovery means that there are now 20 breeding pairs in the national park.
You can be sure of covering plenty of ground on this absorbing trip as the Segway has a range of up to 40km powered by a single charge. Easy to hop on and off, it’s the perfect vehicle for exploring this area of the Algarve. Contemplate the region’s glorious wildlife in its natural habitat. Tours last about 90 minutes.
