Caracoles Mine Exploration
Our adventure will commence at the agreed meeting point, situated in front of the National Mint of Bolivia, where we will gather before venturing into one of the active mines in the region.
Boarding a bus, we will travel towards the rural outskirts, specifically to Cerro Rico, recognized as the globe’s most significant silver source. Historically, this site was pivotal during colonial periods, with substantial silver extraction contributing to the wealth of the Spanish Empire.
Equipped with safety gear, our first stop will be at the mining market and the adjacent chemical lab, where minerals undergo analysis and categorization.
Our expedition continues with a climb up the hill, pausing at an observation point to admire panoramic views of Potosí. Following this, we will enter the illustrious Caracoles mine, a rare survivor from the colonial era still operational today.
Upon our entrance, we will greet Tío, revered as the guardian of miners. Our exploration will lead us through two hours of tunnels, witnessing miners diligently at work.
After an enriching four-hour journey, we will make our way back to the initial meeting point in Potosí.
