Potosi Mines Exploration + Thuru Museum Visit
At the designated time, our meeting point will be in front of the Casa de la Moneda, where we will commence this outdoor tour of the Potosí mines. This excursion suits those who wish to connect with the historical significance and operational aspects of the mines without entering the tunnels.
We will start our visit at the mining market, where participants can observe various supplies utilized in the mining process, including nitroglycerine. Next, we will proceed to the chemical laboratory, responsible for the selection of minerals, before heading to a viewpoint that offers a stunning panoramic view of Potosí.
Afterward, we will explore the outsides of the Candelaria and Rosario mines, taking time to discuss their significance dating back to colonial times. Interestingly, did you know that around 80% of the world’s silver is sourced from this mountain, known as Cerro Rico? The translation as 'Rich Mountain' aptly reflects its wealth!
The final highlight of our journey is the Thuru Museum, named after a traditional method utilized for mineral refining since colonial days. Here, visitors will get an insightful look at this invention and explore exhibits featuring mineral collections and historical mining artifacts.
Upon concluding our visit, we will return to Potosí, approximately three to four hours after our departure.
