Discover the history and nature of the island in Cape Verde with this Maio Island Day Trip from Praia.

Maio Island Day Trip

At 5:30 am, pickup will be at your hotel in Praia to go to the Santiago island port. Present your ferry ticket for access to Maio Island, known for being the flattest in the Cape Verde archipelago.

After a 2-hour ferry ride, arrival is at Porto Inglês dock in the south of Maio Island. The first visit is to the salt mines interpretation center, where the salt trade's historical significance to the island will be explored. Maio is the sixth largest of the ten islands in the archipelago.

The tour proceeds through the towns of Morro, Calheta, and Morrinho to observe crafts and landscapes. The Morrinho dunes are notable and resemble the Sahara's sand mountains, ideal for photographs.

A typical Cape Verdean lunch is provided in the village of Pedro Vaz, followed by a visit to Vila do Maio, the island's capital, to see the San José fortress and the church of Our Lady of Light.

The tour concludes with a brief stop at Bitchirotcha Beach, the most famous on the island. Afterward, you'll return to Porto Inglês for the ferry back to Santiago, arriving at your hotel in Praia by 7:30 pm.
