Why visit the Castelnau-Bretenoux Castle?
Located in the village of Prudhomat in the Lot region, the Castelnau-Bretenoux Castle is a significant medieval fortress in northern Occitania. Your ticket allows you to explore this fortress, dating back to the 12th century. The castle, a symbol of the Castelnau barons, underwent renovations in the 15th and 16th centuries to improve its defenses against artillery.
After the last Castelnau died in 1715, the castle fell into disrepair. A fire in 1851 further damaged it. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, restoration efforts by Jean Mouliérat, a notable tenor, revived the castle. He acquired it and significantly contributed to its restoration.
During your visit, appreciate the collection curated by Jean Mouliérat, which features period furniture, tapestries, and various sacred art pieces. Additionally, the castle's windows offer a panoramic view of the Prudhomat landscape.
