Around the picturesque Chubut River valley, there are several towns with curious Welsh names, such as Rawson, Trelew, and Gaiman. Find out why this corner of Argentina is home to a small piece of Wales, and discover its community and culture, when you take this fascinating tour from Puerto Madryn.
Chubut Valley Trip
At the designated time, we'll depart from your hotel in Puerto Madryn and head to Rawson. Once we arrive at the capital of Argentina's Chubut province, you will have the option to board a boat for a fantastic dolphin-watching cruise. During the journey, you'll see magnificent marine animals that inhabit the southern Atlantic region.
After the boat trip, we will continue to the coastal resort of Playa Union, where you'll have free time to enjoy a drink and take in the views. Next, we will journey to the beautiful Chubut River valley. This area is where Welsh colonists established a 'tiny corner of Wales in South America'. Our next stop is the heart of this community - the town of Gaiman.
As we explore the main streets of the town center, you'll see the Welsh legacy that is still vibrant. The cultural heritage of Gaiman is noticeable throughout, from the old railway station to the colonial-style housing built by the first arrivals at the end of the 19th century. Before leaving the town, we will visit a classic teahouse to try an authentic afternoon snack of Welsh tea and biscuits.
Our final stop is at another significant town in the valley with a traditional Welsh name - Trewlew. This settlement began to develop following the construction of the Central Chubut Railway, which linked the Chubut River valley to Puerto Madryn. During the tour, you'll learn about the importance of this train line in the region's evolution. We will also visit the lagoon located in the heart of the town, where you can spot flamingos and other birds that are part of this unique ecosystem.
Our tour of Trewlew concludes at the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum, which you can explore. The enormous dinosaur fossils will leave you amazed! Finally, we will return to your hotel in Puerto Madryn, concluding this 8-hour day trip.
