Embark on a journey to the stunning island of Chiloé, where you will explore one of Chile's most significant penguin colonies. Immerse yourself in the vibrant nature of the Greater Island of Chiloé and the historic town of Ancud.

Chiloé Island: Discovering Chacao, Ancud & Puñihuil Penguins

Your adventure begins at 8:30 am with departure from Puerto Varas. The first stop will be the quaint village of Pargua, where we will board a ferry ride to Chacao, a charming settlement located on Chiloé Island, renowned for its picturesque landscapes.

Upon reaching Chacao, we will continue our journey to the Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument. This striking group of rocky islets off the Chiloé coast serves as a sanctuary for Humboldt and Patagonian penguins during their breeding season. Additionally, this protected area is home to various other wildlife, such as red-legged cormorants and kelp gulls. A boat ride will allow us to observe these fascinating creatures, though please note that the cost for this experience is not included in the package.

Next, we will visit Ancud, the island's former capital until 1982. Here, we will delve into Chiloé's colonial past by exploring the Regional Museum and the remarkably preserved Fort San Antonio.

After admiring the cannon battery at the fort, we will proceed to the municipal market, where an array of local handicrafts and culinary delights from both land and sea await. A full hour will be allocated for you to indulge in some of the tasty regional cuisine offered by the various stalls in the market.

As our day comes to an end, we will return to Puerto Varas, with an expected arrival time of 6:30 pm.
