This comprehensive journey through the Los Lagos region offers a chance to explore the town of Maullín while engaging in birdwatching at Quenuir Bajo, where we will discover key migratory bird species found in Chile.

Maullín Excursion + Quenuir Bajo Birdwatching

At the specified departure time, we will collect you from your hotel and set off towards the southern town of Maullín. Upon arrival, a guided tour will showcase the main square and the local church.

Next, we will participate in an informative session regarding the wetlands of the WHSRN: the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. Following this introduction, we will make our way to the Maullín pier to board a boat headed for Quenuir Bajo.

Upon reaching the pier, a brief walk will take us to the wetland known as Las Lajas. This vibrant ecosystem, home to nearly 53% of Chile's migratory birds, will provide the perfect backdrop for us to utilize binoculars and telephoto lenses.

Weather permitting and depending on the time of year, we might encounter various species including flamingos, coscoroba swans, imperial and rock cormorants, black-necked swans, curlews, and pilpilens. After exploring Las Lajas, we will pause for a light snack featuring a cereal bar, a sandwich, and your choice of either juice, tea, or coffee.

Following our break, we will continue our walk to another significant wetland—the Quenuir Lagoon. Here, our birdwatching expedition will proceed, concluding at the charming restaurant La Picá del Flamenco, where we will indulge in three delicious Chilean empanadas filled with meat, cheese, and seafood.

Once we have refreshed ourselves, we will stroll back to the pier for our return journey to Maullín. Afterward, we will head back to your hotel, arriving approximately eleven hours after our initial pickup.
