Embark on an unforgettable journey through the dramatic high valleys of northern Argentina, starting from Purmamarca. As part of this excursion, you will visit the charming town of Iruya.
Journey to Iruya
Departing at the scheduled time from your hotel in Purmamarca, we will venture into the magnificent high-altitude valleys of northern Argentina, a remarkable natural landscape in South America.
Our route will take us approximately 2.5 miles through a unique transitional zone that sits between the arid desert and the lush Argentinean jungle. This region boasts a diverse landscape with plentiful resources. Along the journey, we will share insights into how ancient communities cultivated their food using terracing techniques designed to capture the water flowing down the mountainous terrain.
Once we have gained a deeper understanding of this traditional agricultural method, our adventure will lead us to the scenic town of Iruya. You will be captivated by the stunning vistas framed by hills and rivers that surround this settlement! Here, we will navigate the town's steep stone streets, uncovering its hidden attractions.
We will delve into the historic center and visit the parish church, strategically placed on a hill that offers panoramic views of the entire town. From the renowned Mirador del Cóndor viewpoint, we will savor the breathtaking perspectives of the valley below.
As our exploration of Iruya comes to an end, you'll have an hour to indulge in the local cuisine. After your culinary experience, we will make our way back to your hotel in Purmamarca, where we expect to arrive around eight hours after our departure.
