Viltipoco Trails Hike
At 9 am, we will depart from the Church of Purmamarca towards the paths that the Indigenous leader Viltipoco once traveled.
During the hike, we will discuss the Calchaquí Wars, which occurred in the 16th century when Spaniards waged war against several indigenous peoples, including the Humauacas led by Viltipoco. After the fall of the Inca empire, he managed to hold out in Purmamarca's mountains for 60 years.
As we learn about Viltipoco's story, we will walk along a dry riverbed and admire Purmamarca's scenery. This area is notable for its geological processes developed over four million years.
The route will continue through a narrow valley, offering insight into Andean cosmovision. We will observe the endemic fauna and flora, learn to distinguish plant species, and discuss their historical uses in food and natural medicine since the time of Viltipoco.
We expect to return to the starting point in Purmamarca between 1 and 2 pm.
