Almagruz Caves Guided Tour
The tour begins at a time of your choice, meeting at the car park of the interpretation centre of the Almagruz Troglodyte Habitat Complex. This location features numerous caves from prehistoric and contemporary times.
The visit starts with an overview of the archaeological site of the Guadix-Baza basin, known for ancient European hominid fossils. This supports the existence of troglodyte settlements in the Almagruz caves.
Participants will learn about how early inhabitants lived and the medieval alterations made in the caves. The tour includes entry into a farmhouse cave, known as Cortijo Viejo Almagruz, where visitors will explore the 16th-century kitchen, bedrooms, courtyard, and other adapted spaces within the cave structure.
As the tour progresses, attendees will discover aspects of rural life and local culture, discussing topics such as cheese production, the tradition of matanzas, and artistic techniques involving esparto grass, wool, silk, and clay.
The guided tour lasts one hour and 15 minutes, concluding back at the starting point.
