Ever dreamed of standing in both hemispheres simultaneously? Join this journey from Quito, where you can extend one foot into the northern hemisphere and the other into the southern hemisphere at the equatorial line that signifies the Middle of the World.
Description
At the scheduled time, we will travel northward to the Mitad del Mundo, a site renowned for its monument that indicates the precise position of the equator, lending its name to the country.
Amid a striking natural backdrop, the Equatorial Monument is positioned at latitude 0º0'0". Owing to its pyramidal structure adorned with four monoliths at each corner, this obelisk denotes the geographic orientation of the four cardinal directions.
We'll visit the Ethnographic Museum and explore the equinoctial line, which serves as the imaginary barrier that splits the earth into its two hemispheres. Standing with a foot on each side of this line, you’ll literally be in the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time—right in the heart of the Middle of the World!
In this remarkable region, you'll be granted free time to savor some local delicacies, such as yahuarlocro, a beloved potato-based soup, or immerse yourself in the ancestral homes that are in the vicinity.
After our exploration, we will regroup to commence the return journey, aiming to finish the entire experience in about 4 to 5 hours.
