At the scheduled time, we will converge at the Gilberto Freyre Foundation to initiate our journey through the historic residence of this acclaimed Brazilian author and sociologist.
Gilberto de Mello Freyre resided in this house for over 40 years, although its origins trace back to the 19th century when it was originally named Villa Santo Antonio de Apipucos.
Now transformed into a house-museum, the space houses many artifacts that once belonged to the creator of The Master and the Slaves. We will delve into how this pivotal work has shaped Brazilian society as we navigate through various chambers of the mansion and its surrounding gardens. Are you aware that it hosts more than 100 indigenous species?
As we appreciate the ornate interior, we will uncover the authorship’s interests and affinities, featuring decorations such as religious iconography, African artworks, English silverware, Eastern ceramics, and of course, the beloved Portuguese tiles.
