Puffin Watching in ReykjavÍk
The optimal time for viewing puffins in Reykjavík is between May and August. During this time, these birds return to Iceland after a long winter at sea and inhabit the Nordic islands.
At the designated time, we'll meet at Geirsfata, number 11, conveniently located near the port of Reykjavík. Once assembled, we'll board a wooden boat and embark on our journey north across the Faxaflói Bay, home to some of the largest puffin populations in Iceland. Their black and white feathers may resemble those of penguins, but their brightly colored beaks set them apart! You'll have ample time to take photos and use binoculars for a closer view of the birds.
During the tour, the English-speaking guide will share interesting facts about the lives of these birds. For instance, did you know puffins are monogamous and lay just one egg each year? An audio guide is also available in five languages, ensuring that you’ll be knowledgeable about puffins by the end of the trip! Additionally, you'll have the chance to spot other local birds such as the common eider, arctic tern, and cormorants.
After an hour's puffin watching boat trip, we will return to the original departure port.
What Island Will We Visit?
On the tour day, the boat captain will select the best Reykjavík island for puffin sightings based on tides and weather conditions. Options include Akurey or Lundey, both of which are known for abundant puffin activity and are located a similar distance from the city.
We won't disembark on any island to avoid disturbing the birds, but we will get as close as possible to their coasts while respecting the puffins.
The bus will pick you up from the specified meeting point 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
