Riga in the Holocaust
Meet us in front of the House of the Blackheads Museum to begin our historical Holocaust tour of Riga. Prepare to explore the past of this capital city during World War II.
As we walk, we will reach the Great Choral Synagogue commemorative monument, where the Jewish temple was burned down by the Nazis on July 4th, 1941. This event marked the beginning of the Holocaust in Latvia and resulted in numerous casualties among the Jewish population.
Next, we will visit the old Jewish Quarter, designated by the Nazis as a concentration area for Jewish families. This area was historically surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by the Latvian army under German command, with orders to shoot anyone attempting to escape.
We will also share information about the old Jewish cemetery nearby, which was transformed into a recreational park after the war, leaving only the great stone wall with the Star of David as a reminder of its past.
After two hours of exploring this historical narrative, our tour will conclude in front of Peitav Shul, the only still-active synagogue in Latvia, serving over 7,000 individuals in the current Jewish community for worship.
