On this boat ride through the Ria Lagartos mangroves, we'll discover the diverse ecosystem of this unique natural environment designated as a Biosphere Reserve.
Description
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Rio Lagartos boardwalk to begin our boat ride through the mangroves. We will enter the mangroves located in the estuary of the Ria Lagartos, a Biosphere Reserve on the northern Yucatán coast, home to over 1,450 plant species. As we proceed, we will learn to identify the main botanical characteristics of each species.
The Ria Lagartos reserve is noted for its diversity of water birds. During the trip, we will observe different types of cranes, pelicans, and hawks. If conditions permit, we may also see American flamingos.
We will continue our cruise through the mangroves, learning more about this fascinating ecosystem, while sailing around the coastline of the Rio Lagartos beach and enjoying the views in this area.
After a 2.5-hour cruise through the mangroves of the Ria Lagartos estuary, we will conclude our boat ride at the starting point.
Operating hours
The tour will take place between 7 am and 10 am, as this is when the birds of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve are most visible. We will contact you to confirm the exact departure time prior to the day of the activity.
Birdwatching
The Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is among the best locations in the Yucatán Peninsula to observe flamingos and other birds. However, sightings can vary due to factors such as weather and breeding seasons of different species.
