On this boat ride through the Ria Lagartos mangroves, we'll discover the diverse ecosystem of this unique natural environment designated as a Biosphere Reserve.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Rio Lagartos boardwalk to embark on a boat ride through the mangroves. We will enter the mangroves located in the estuary of the Ria Lagartos, which is home to more than 1,450 plant species. Participants will learn to differentiate the main botanical characteristics of each species.
The reserve is known for its diversity of water birds. During the trip, we'll observe various types of cranes, pelicans, and hawks. If conditions permit, we may also see the American flamingos.
The cruise will continue as we learn more about the ecosystem and sail around the coastline of Rio Lagartos beach. We will conclude our 2.5-hour boat ride at the starting point.
Operating hours
This tour takes place between 7 am and 10 am since this is when birds are most likely to be seen. We will confirm the exact departure time prior to the day of the activity.
Birdwatching
The Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of the best locations in the Yucatan Peninsula for birdwatching, including flamingos. However, bird sightings depend on factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
