El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike
Day 1: Riobamba - El Altar Volcano
At 7 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and travel to the base of the El Altar Volcano, located at an altitude of 22,965 feet (7,000 metres). Upon arrival, we will provide a packed lunch for the hike and prepare our equipment for the 9-mile (15-kilometre) route through Sangay National Park. During our ascent, we will encounter laurel trees, royal palms, achupallas, ferns, and orchids.
After 7 hours of hiking, we will set up our tents for the night. At the end of the day, dinner will be served under the night sky of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Day 2: El Altar Volcano - Riobamba
We will start the day with breakfast before heading towards the summit, providing a bag of food for the route. After crossing 1 mile (2 kilometres) of rocky trails, we will reach the El Altar Volcano's summit at 13,451 feet (4,100 metres). Inside the crater, we will see the Yellow Lagoon, formed after the volcano's most recent eruption in the 15th century. We will then return to the base and board a minibus back to Riobamba, arriving at your hotel at approximately 4 pm.
