El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike

Day 1: Departure from Riobamba to El Altar Volcano

Your excitement begins at 7 am when we pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba to commence our journey to the base of El Altar Volcano, rising to an impressive 22,965 feet (7,000 metres). Upon arrival, you'll receive a packed lunch to sustain you during the hike along the 9-mile (15-kilometre) trail that winds through the stunning Sangay National Park. Expect to encounter diverse flora, including laurels, royal palms, achupallas, ferns, and orchids as we ascend.

After a full day of about 7 hours of trekking, we will establish our camp for the night. We will gather for a satisfying dinner under the captivating starry sky of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Day 2: Descend from El Altar Volcano to Riobamba

Wake up to a new day at the mountain's base! We’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast to energize ourselves for the day ahead. Before heading toward the summit, a food bag will be provided for your journey.

Our route features 1 mile (2 kilometres) of rocky pathways leading us to the summit of the El Altar Volcano at a height of 13,451 feet (4,100 metres). Inside the crater, you'll find the Yellow Lagoon, a beautiful body of water that emerged after the volcano's last eruption in the 15th century. Once we have conquered the peak, we will make our way back to the base and take our minibus for the return trip to Riobamba, expected to arrive at your hotel by 4 pm.

Accommodation

This experience includes 1 night's accommodation in tents. Along with the tent, your package also provides a sleeping bag and mat for a comfortable stay.
