El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike

On our 2-day hike to the El Altar Volcano, you will experience Ecuador's Andean scenery. This activity is ideal for nature and mountain enthusiasts.

El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike

Day 1: Riobamba - El Altar Volcano

At 7 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and travel to the base of the El Altar Volcano, which is located at an altitude of 22,965 feet (7,000 meters). Upon arrival, we will provide a packed lunch for the hike and prepare equipment for the 9-mile (15-kilometer) route through Sangay National Park. During the ascent, you will see laurel trees, royal palms, achupallas, ferns, and orchids.

After 7 hours of walking, we will set up our tents for the night. We will enjoy dinner under the Andean night sky.

Day 2: El Altar Volcano - Riobamba

The next morning, after breakfast, we will provide a bag of food for the day. We will hike across 1 mile (2 kilometers) of rocky trails to reach the El Altar Volcano's summit at 13,451 feet (4,100 meters). Inside the crater, you will see the Yellow Lagoon, formed after the volcano's last eruption in the 15th century. We will then return to the base and take a minibus back to Riobamba, with an expected arrival at your hotel around 4 pm.
