Hiking to the Chimborazo Volcano Ice Mine
At 7 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and head to the village of Cuatro Esquinas, located at an altitude of 14,271 feet (4,350 meters). This will be the starting point for our hike to the ice mine of the Chimborazo Volcano.
During the 6-mile (10-kilometer) hike, we will explore the endemic plant life of the region and observe llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas in the Andean valleys. Fun facts about these animals will be shared as we spot them.
Upon arrival at the Chimborazo ice mine, we will take a break for a picnic lunch, which includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and juice. Following the break, we will begin our return journey, arriving back at your hotel in Riobamba by 4:30 pm.
Ice Extraction
If you opt for this additional experience, you will attend a demonstration of ice extraction conducted by an industry expert. This option will provide insight into the traditional business and the efforts of locals to sell the ice in the area.
