On this half-day trip to Ostia Antica, explore the Roman Empire's most important port. Roam ancient roads and visit Roman baths from 2,000 years ago.
Activity Details
We will meet just outside the main entrance to Piramide Metro Station at the indicated time to begin the half-day tour of Ostia Antica. This will be followed by a brief 30-minute train ride to Ostia Antica.
The tour through the archaeological site will begin with a brief introduction to the history of the Roman Empire's most important seaport. As we walk the ancient streets, we will learn about the grain trade that contributed to the city's wealth, which once supported 50,000 inhabitants.
We will visit the Baths of Neptune and admire the preserved Neptune's Chariot mosaic. These baths featured numerous pools, saunas, and gymnasiums. A total of 26 different bath complexes have been uncovered in Ostia, some with an intact thermodynamic system from 2,000 years ago.
Next, we will head to the amphitheater, a notable site once used for gladiator battles and theater performances, which remains well-preserved and still hosts shows and concerts.
We will then visit the Forum of Corporations, an open-air market for exchanging ideas and goods, where people sold both international and everyday items.
After 4 hours of sightseeing, the guided tour will conclude, and you will have the option to return to Rome at your convenience using your open-return train ticket.
