Hike Details

At the scheduled time, we will gather at Puerto Caño Hondo, the gateway to Los Haitises National Park, for an extraordinary hiking experience.

We'll embark on a trek covering approximately 2.5 miles (3.8 kilometers) leading to Caño Salado, surrounded by lush coconut, coffee, and cocoa trees. As we journey deeper into the northern Dominican Republic's rainforest, keep your eyes open for the elusive small solenodon, a unique mammal with ancestral ties to moles and shrews, currently classified as endangered.

Be alert for the vibrant parrots, pelicans, and kingbirds that may join us along the path! We’ll share fascinating insights about the Taino people, the original inhabitants of this park, whose name translates to 'mountainous land.'

Upon reaching the trail's conclusion, we will board a small boat for the ride back, allowing you to take in the beauty of the red and white mangroves.

After four hours of exploration, we will conclude our adventure at the starting point.
