Why Visit the Basilica of Saint-Denis?
The Basilica of Saint-Denis is the first Gothic structure, featuring pointed arches, rib-vaulted ceilings, and stained glass windows. This Medieval abbey church serves as the royal necropolis, housing the tombs of many French monarchs, including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
Entry provides access to explore its interior, showcasing sculptural masterpieces and a spectacular rose window. Other notable features include the organ, choir, and adjoining chapels. Visitors are encouraged to visit the Fabrique de la flèche at the monument's foot, to learn about the Basilica's construction.
Opening Times
April 1 - September 30: Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 6:15 pm; Sundays, from 12 pm to 6:15 pm.October 1 - March 31: Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 5:15 pm; Sundays, from 12 pm to 5:15 pm.
Final admission is 30 minutes before closing. The royal necropolis and Fabrique de la flèche are open Tuesday to Sunday. Timings are flexible and subject to change.
Special Times
Thursday, October 23: the Basilica opens at 11 am instead of 10 am.
Partial Closures
The Basilica may close on certain days due to masses, concerts, and events. Check specific dates in advance.
Free Admission
Admission is free for:
Youth from the European Union aged 18 to 25.Children under 18, regardless of nationality.
It is also free on the first Sunday of the month from January 1 to March 31 and from November 1 to December 31, as well as the 3rd weekend of September. A certifying document is required for eligibility for free admission at the ticket office.
