Tour of the Pedra de Lume + Santa Maria Salt Mines
Your journey will commence with a pick-up at your hotel in Santa Maria, scheduled between 8:20 and 8:40 am, from where we will set out to discover some of the island's most renowned locations.
The first stop will be Pedra de Lume, recognized as the island's oldest settlement, established in 1804. After a leisurely walk through this historic town, we will proceed to its notable salt mines, a major attraction for visitors. Interestingly, this site boasts the distinction of being the only salt deposit globally situated within a volcanic crater.
Visitors to this location can expect breathtaking vistas showcasing landscapes adorned in shades of pink and turquoise, which have led to this area being nominated by Unesco as a potential World Heritage Site since 2004.
Next, we will travel to the Santa Maria salt marshes, where we will gain insight into the vital role of the salt industry for the local economy. Afterward, we will return to the town of Santa Maria to unwind at a seafront restaurant, where we will indulge in a taste of local delicacies. Sample traditional treats such as fidjoss and baobab juice.
The tour will conclude with a return to your hotel, arriving around 12:30 pm.
