Salvador de Bahia African Culture Tour
We will meet at 2 pm in front of the Cathedral Basilica of San Salvador to begin a walking tour focused on the African culture in Salvador de Bahia, specifically in the Pelourinho neighborhood.
Our first stop will be Terreiro de Jesus, where we will explore the history of colonization in Brazil by the Jesuit Missions and the Portuguese colonization. We will also highlight notable African figures associated with Salvador de Bahia.
Next, we will continue to the Cross of Sao Francisco. Here, we will discuss the formation of a 19th-century men's organization aimed at aiding the black community in their struggle for liberation. Other elements of African culture, including samba and capoeira dances, will also be covered, encouraging movement to the rhythms.
Finally, we will visit the Escola do Olodum, a center focused on cultural and educational initiatives of African descent, where we will review the significance of Carnival in the city.
After three hours, we will conclude the guided tour at the Cross of San Francisco.
