On this walking tour of Pelourinho, we'll discover the African heritage that exists in this Brazilian city, focusing on stories of colonization, slavery, and liberation.
Salvador de Bahia African Culture Tour
We'll meet at 2 pm in front of the Cathedral Basilica of San Salvador and begin a walking tour to explore the influence of African culture in Salvador de Bahia, particularly in the Pelourinho neighborhood.
First, we will visit Terreiro de Jesus, where we will discuss the colonization of this area by the Jesuit Missions and Portuguese colonization, along with notable African figures in Salvador's history.
Next, we will walk to the Cross of Sao Francisco. Here, we will learn about a men's organization established in the 19th century aimed at supporting the black community in their struggle for liberation. Additional topics will include the significance of samba and capoeira as vital elements of African culture.
Finally, we will visit the Escola do Olodum, a cultural center where we will discuss the importance of Carnival in Salvador.
After three hours, the guided tour will conclude at the Cross of San Francisco.
