Embark on an immersive experience in the Ecuadorian Amazon with this comprehensive day trip to the Grand Canyon of Cotundo, a sacred space of the Quijos people.

Day Trip to the Grand Canyon of Cotundo

Your journey begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Quito between 4:30 and 5 am, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure to the hidden gem of the jungle, the Gran Cañón de Cotundo.

As we depart from the capital, we'll transition into the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, recognized as the homeland of the renowned Quijos indigenous tribe. Expect a scenic drive of roughly three and a half hours, where you'll witness the region's vibrant and lush landscape.

Before arriving in Cotundo, we will pause in the historical town of Baeza, the very first settlement established in the Amazon basin during the 16th century. Here, you’ll have an hour of leisure to enjoy breakfast and explore the town's rich history.

Upon reaching Cotundo at approximately 9:30 am, your rainforest expedition commences. Attune your senses to the melodic birdsong and observe the striking array of colors from the local fruits. This area boasts over 500 unique plant species, alongside an abundance of flowers and butterflies, making it a truly extraordinary destination.

Next, we will embark on a half-mile trek ascending the mountain, gradually leading us down to the Gran Cañón of Cotundo. This remarkable geological site, sculpted by river erosion over millennia, features breathtaking waterfalls nestled within the mountain.

You'll have around 3 hours to explore this area before we break for lunch at about 2 pm to recharge our energy. This cave complex has historical significance as a site for sacred healing rituals conducted by ancient tribes.

During our expedition, we will hike and traverse various rivers, eventually reaching the interior of the caves. Spend an hour unwinding in the natural pools and jacuzzis while marveling at the ancient geological formations surrounding you.

Our cave exploration wraps up at roughly 4:30 pm, as we begin our return journey to Quito. You can expect to be back at your hotel by 8 pm.
