On this visit to the El Grifo winery, we'll explore one of the oldest wineries in the Canary Islands, discovering the effects that volcanic soil can have on wine.
El Grifo Winery
Welcome to the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the oldest in Spain. El Grifo Winery utilizes land once covered by volcanic lava and sand after the eruption between 1730 and 1736, transforming it into an estate with vineyards and fruit trees.
The winery's covered wine press dates back to 1775. Since then, elements combined with the expertise of various families have produced wines with renowned character. El Grifo Winery features 19th-century vines that are hand-harvested one grape at a time. The winery also includes a museum that recounts the story of wine on the island.
Tour Details
The journey begins with a meet-up at the entrance of El Grifo Winery at the scheduled time. Once assembled, we will uncover the secrets behind Lanzarote’s volcanic wines, starting at the El Grifo Museum, which houses the original wine press from 1775 and barrels of Volcanic Malvasía wine from 1881.
Next, we’ll visit the old winery, which has preserved its traditions for over two centuries. We’ll explore Lanzarote’s century-old vineyards among the chabocos—hollows in volcanic ash. The tour includes the old family home, wine library, and modern winery.
Inside the family house, each room tells stories from generations of winemaking. The library has over 5,000 volumes on island viticulture. In the modern winery, cutting-edge technology supports current winemaking processes.
Finally, we will enjoy a tasting of six wines, paired with three traditional Canarian cheeses and a chocolate truffle, ending our two-hour tour.
