Travel back in time to San Diego's past on this tour of the Gaslamp Quarter. Haunted houses, Victorian buildings, crime stories, and old brothels await you.
Description
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the captivating history of one of San Diego's most renowned neighborhoods. Join us at the indicated time in front of the illustrious Spreckles Theatre, whose façade will transport you to the city's fascinating origins.
The history of the Gaslamp Quarter, also known as The Stingaree, had a tumultuous beginning. Crime ran rampant, and safety was scarce. Nevertheless, we'll embark on a journey to witness the remarkable transformation of this area into a thriving port city.
To discover its origins, we'll explore the streets of the Gaslamp Quarter, filled with colourful buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From old brothels to gambling halls, it has a colourful past.
As we wander, we'll encounter iconic landmarks such as Horton Plaza Park, the US Grant Hotel, and the historic Balboa Theatre. Notably, this is where the US Marines found respite during their journey to the First World War.
We'll continue exploring the Gaslamp Quarter, stopping at the Yuma Building, a great example of Victorian architecture, and next to David Horton's House, a mansion that is said to be haunted. The tour will end after a 2-hour walk in one of the most iconic corners of the Gaslamp Quarter.
