La Carolina Day Trip
After picking you up from your hotel in San Luis at 7:30 am, we'll set off across the Pancanta Valley to La Carolina. The town is named after Spanish King Charles III.
Upon arrival in this town located at the foot of the Cerro Tomolasta, we will discuss the town's history related to the "gold fever" during the 18th century. During this period, the Spanish transported gold to Chile for melting at the Santiago Mint.
To learn about gold mining, we'll visit the La Carolina gold mine. We will don mining gear and descend through the tunnels to understand past mining methods.
At the end of the guided tour of the mine, we will visit the outskirts of La Carolina to see the Inti Huasi cave, an important prehistoric archeological site. Here, we will learn about the hominids who lived in the area.
Afterwards, we will return to La Carolina, where you will have an hour of free time for lunch before heading back to your hotel in San Luis, arriving around 2:30 pm.
