The Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Canary Islands, featuring subtropical plants.
What is the Palmetum?
Located south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife's port, the Palmetum spans nearly 30 acres (12 hectares) on an artificial hill that was previously a landfill. It offers ocean views and a vast collection of flora, particularly palms and plants native to the islands.
What will I find at the Palmetum?
The Palmetum houses the largest collection of palms in Europe with over 500 species. It is organized into various biogeographic zones, featuring flora from the Caribbean, Hawaii, Melanesia, Australia, Madagascar, and the Canary Islands. The garden includes around 2000 different plant species from tropical and subtropical climates, along with a landscaped area for relaxation near streams, lakes, and waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and observe wild birds such as common moorhens, blue tits, blackbirds, and hoopoes.
