Discover the extraordinary paintings of the Altamira caves and visit the museum's replica of this over 30,000-year-old site. You'll also explore the medieval town of Santillana del Mar.
Tour Details
We'll depart from Santander and head to Santillana del Mar, where the Altamira cave is located. This cave is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in the world, with only five people permitted to enter weekly to ensure its preservation.
Next, we will visit the Altamira National Museum and Research Centre to see a life-size replica of the caves and learn about the discovery of the cave in 1868.
Following this, we will tour Santillana del Mar, a medieval town known as "the town of three lies," as it is not holy (santo), has no plains (llana), and no sea (mar).
The tour includes a walk to the Plaza Mayor and through the town's cobbled streets, culminating at the collegiate church of Santa Juliana. You will have an hour of free time to explore on your own and admire the medieval architecture in the historic centre.
At the end of the tour, we will return to Santander.
