Santarem Guided Tour and Cathedral
We will meet up at the time of your choice in the garden of the Republic, in front of the former convent of San Francisco. The guided tour will start here with a walking exploration of the northern part of Santarém, focusing on significant historical moments.
After viewing the gothic-style façade of the Santa Clara Church, we will proceed to the barracks associated with the Revolution of the Carnations, discussing this pivotal military event in Portugal's history.
Next, we will visit the ornate Town Hall, and at the municipal market, we will observe the traditional decorative tiles dating back to the 18th century. We will also explore the remains of the city walls to learn about the city during the Muslim era.
We will encounter a sculpture in honor of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira and discuss his significance. A tasting of local sweets will also be included.
The tour will conclude with a visit to the cathedral of Santarém and the Diocesan Museum, showcasing over 150 pieces of art and baroque design, wrapping up two hours after our start outside the museum.
