Santarem Guided Tour and Cathedral
We will meet up at the time of your choice in the garden of the Republic, in front of the former convent of San Francisco. From here, we will begin a guided tour on foot through the northern part of Santarém, learning about its important historical moments.
After admiring the gothic-style façade of the Santa Clara Church, we will stroll along the barracks that played an important role in the Revolution of the Carnations. Along the way, you will learn about this crucial military uprising in Portugal's history.
We then walk to the Town Hall and, at the municipal market, we will see the traditional decorative tiles, many dating back to the 18th century. Afterward, we will visit the remains of the city walls to discuss the city during the Muslim era.
We will encounter a sculpture in honor of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira and discuss his significance. We will also stop to taste local sweets.
The tour concludes with a visit to the cathedral of Santarém and the Diocesan Museum, which houses more than 150 pieces of art and baroque design. We will finish the tour outside the museum two hours after we started.
