Santarem Guided Tour and Cathedral
We will meet up at the time of your choice in the garden of the Republic, in front of the former convent of San Francisco. From here, we will begin a guided tour on foot through the northern part of Santarém, learning all about its important historical moments.
After admiring the gothic-style façade of the Santa Clara Church, we will stroll along the barracks relevant to the Revolution of the Carnations. You will learn about this significant military uprising in Portugal's history.
Next, we will walk to the elegant Town Hall and visit the municipal market to see traditional decorative tiles from the 18th century. We will also visit the remains of the city walls to learn about the city during the Muslim era.
We will then see a sculpture in honor of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira and discuss his significance. You will also have the opportunity to taste some local sweets.
The tour will conclude with a visit to the cathedral of Santarém and the Diocesan Museum, which houses over 150 pieces of art and baroque design. The tour will end outside the museum, two hours after we started.
