Machu Picchu Hike: 2 Day Inca Trail Itinerary

Day 1 - Inca Trail

On the first day, pickup from your hotel in Cusco is at 5 am. A bus takes you to Ollantaytambo Railway Station to board the train to Kilometre 104, a popular starting point for hiking the Inca Trail. You will trek along the Andes mountains, reaching the ruins of Chachabamba, before climbing up to Wiñay Wayna, a key archaeological complex.

A picnic lunch will be provided, followed by a trek to Inti Punku (The Sun Gate), where you will have your first view of Machu Picchu. Afterward, a bus will take you down to Aguas Calientes for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Difficulty: moderate.

Hike duration: 6 hours.

Total distance: 12 km (7.5 miles).

Day 2 - Machu Picchu

On the second day, breakfast is followed by a bus ride up to Machu Picchu. You will participate in a two-hour guided tour of this archaeological complex, exploring key sites and learning about their history. Free time will follow for personal exploration or visiting Huayna Picchu mountain.

Afterward, a bus will return you to Aguas Calientes for free time to eat and stroll around. The afternoon includes the return train to Ollantaytambo and a bus back to Cusco, arriving at your hotel around 9:30 pm.

Difficulty: easy.

Hike duration: 2 hours.

Total distance: 4 km (2.5 miles).

Entrance to Huayna Picchu

To visit Huayna Picchu mountain, you must book your entrance ticket through the Peruvian Ministry of Culture's website.

Important

If the activity is cancelled due to strikes or weather conditions, an alternative date will be provided or a refund minus the Inca Trail entrance fee (222 PEN) will be issued.
