Puma Orqo & Maukallaqta Day Trip

This tour focuses on the origins of the Inca civilization, featuring visits to two significant archaeological sites. At 8 am, you will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco and travel through mountainous terrain towards the province of Paruro. Along the way, you will pass through villages including Yaurisque, where you can see the ancient Church of San Esteban.

The first stop is the archaeological complex of Puma Orqo. Here, you will explore the legend behind the Inca culture, informed by chroniclers such as Juan de Betanzos and Cristobal de Molina. Additionally, you will visit the Tamputoqocaves, which may relate to the empire's origins.

Following this, you will hike 3 miles (5 kilometers) along the Yaurisque River to Maukallaqta, another archaeological site with over 200 masonry buildings. This location potentially housed a significant oracle with walls covered in gold.

Furthermore, you will see ceremonial fountains, alcoves, and other sacred structures illustrating the historical and religious significance of Maukallaqta, which faced destruction during the Spanish conquest. The tour concludes with a break for lunch and returns to Cusco by 4 pm, after which you will be dropped off at your hotel.
