Explore the anchovy canning process in Cantabria through a fascinating tour of a Santoña canning factory and its marshland. This experience also includes a visit to one of the town's key attractions.

Description

Our meeting point is set near the vibrant mural of Santoña, located next to the Avenida de Lons parking area. Are you ready to unveil one of Cantabria's secret gems? Let’s set off on this adventure!

Before we head out, we'll explore the fascinating cultural and historical background of Santoña, shining a light on prominent figures such as Juan de la Cosa, an influential sailor and cartographer from the area who contributed to the exploration of the Americas. Additionally, we will share captivating stories about the Faro del Caballo and the town's famous Carnival, acknowledged as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

Our journey will take us to the Natural Park of the Marshes of Santoña, Victoria, and Joyel. This vast wetland, recognized as one of the largest in northern Iberia, holds great ecological importance. As we wander through this natural wonder, we will discuss its vital role as a sanctuary for numerous migratory bird species.

Next, we will tour one of Santoña's anchovy canning facilities. The specific factory we visit will depend on the season. Here, you will witness the intricate procedure of preparing anchovy fillets, covering everything from cleaning the fish to their careful packaging in tins for distribution.

To conclude our guided factory visit, we will enjoy a tasting experience featuring Santoña's famous anchovies, a definitive emblem of Cantabrian gastronomy.

Ultimately, our excursion will last approximately between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours, bringing our journey to a satisfying end.

Partial Closures

Please note that on Saturday, public holidays, and during extended weekends, the factory may be closed. If this occurs, we will be treated to an anchovy filleting demonstration by one of the factory staff.
