In the abandoned and demilitarised city of Cheorwon, the vestiges of the Korean conflict are evident. Discover the interesting history on this day trip from Seoul.
Description
All armed conflicts result in collateral damage and devastating consequences. The Korean War is no exception, with Cheorwon significantly affected. Under North Korean control from 1945, it was a battleground and has since been rebuilt as part of South Korea. Today, military trucks and checkpoints remain visible reminders of the past.
The day trip begins at the demilitarized area of Cheorwon, marked by a plaque that reads, "The iron horse wants to run again.” A knowledgeable guide will provide explanations during the tour.
We'll visit the Second Tunnel, which is the widest tunnel in Korea, discovered in 1975. Participants will walk along 3.5 kilometres (2.1 miles) to explore this secret invasion route.
Next, we'll visit the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, dedicated to the victims of the conflict and offering views of the border region between the Koreas.
The tour continues to the Woljeong-ri Railway Station, which was rendered unusable after US bombing raids. Lunch, featuring various vegetables, will be provided.
Finally, we'll return to the starting points in Seoul, with an expected duration of 11 to 13 hours.
