On this guided tour of Chinatown, you'll explore the oldest part of Singapore and sample local cuisine.
Description
We will meet at exit A of the MRT station at Raffles Place to begin the walking tour. First, we'll ascend to the Sky Garden in CapitaSpring, the second tallest building in Singapore, for panoramic views of the city.
Next, we'll visit the Temple of Yueh Hai Ching, Singapore's oldest Chinese sanctuary, founded in 1819. Here, you'll view its remarkable carvings and masks while learning about the beliefs and rituals of early Chinese immigrants.
Our route continues to Pekin Street, where an old Chinese boys school and the Fuk Tak Chi Museum, previously a temple for the God of Prosperity, are located.
We will then proceed to Thian Hock Keng, the most significant Hokkien temple in Singapore, constructed using materials from China. Sailors historically visited this temple to thank the Goddess of the Sea. You will see a relic of Buddha's tooth and a gift from the Qing emperor.
After lunch at one of Singapore's oldest noodle houses, we'll explore the traditional trades of Chinatown, visiting a tea shop, a pastry shop, and an ointment store. You'll also see murals by artist Yip Yew Chong, depicting daily life in the past.
The guided tour will conclude after 3.5 hours of sightseeing.
