National Palace of Sintra & Gardens
With this ticket, you can wander through the sophisticated corridors and rooms of the National Palace of Sintra, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The palace's history traces back to the 10th century, when the Arab chronicler Al-Bakri documented it as a seat of Arab governors. By the 13th century, records show that it was frequented by Denis I of Portugal, featuring only a limited number of rooms and a chapel. This notable king is said to have presented the palace to his spouse, Queen Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, marking the beginning of its lengthy association with Portuguese royalty.
The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 led to the destruction of substantial portions of the palace, which were subsequently reconstructed to reflect its 16th-century appearance. Visitors can admire the Spanish-Mudejar styled rooms adorned with intricate tiles, the Hall of the Coats of Arms, the Hall of the Arabs, the Hall of the Swans, and the royal kitchens.
The surrounding gardens have also been revitalized under the aegis of the public entity Parques de Sintra. Since 2013, this entire site has been included in the European Network of Royal Residences.
The National Palace, characterized by its distinctive cone-shaped towers, forms an integral part of the Sintra landscape and the legacy of Portuguese monarchy. A walk through its halls evokes a sense of history, reminiscent of an era steeped in authority and grandeur.
