Communist Sofia Tour
After meeting up at 4 pm in front of the Court House in the heart of Sofia city centre, we will begin our walking tour of the Bulgarian capital's communist past.
First, we will go back to the end of the Second World War. Our expert English-speaking guide will inform us about the birth and evolution of the Bulgarian Communist Party and the significance of two historic figures: Stalin and Churchill.
As we walk around Sofia, we will admire emblematic buildings from the Communist era while our guide discusses the secret police and the various tactics used by the state to maintain control. We will learn what life was like under Communism in Bulgaria, including the health system, gender equality, and the historical impacts on residents today.
We will make a stop at the old Royal Palace, now home to the National Art Gallery, before proceeding to one of the city's most controversial sites: the Monument to the Soviet Army, a location for protests and political vandalism.
Our tour will conclude at around 7 pm in front of the monument dedicated to the victims of Communism.
