Communist Sofia Tour

Meet us at 4 pm by the Court House, situated in the vibrant center of Sofia, to kick off your exploration of the city's communist heritage.

Our journey will take you back to the aftermath of the Second World War. Under the guidance of our knowledgeable English-speaking expert, you will learn about the formation and growth of the Bulgarian Communist Party, along with the crucial roles played by historical figures such as Stalin and Churchill.

As we roam the streets of Sofia, you'll be captivated by iconic structures erected during the Communist regime. Our guide will share insights into the secret police and various methods the regime employed to maintain control over citizens. You will gain an understanding of daily life under Communism in Bulgaria, encompassing aspects like the healthcare system, gender equality, and the lingering effects of this era on today’s society.

A key stop will be the historic Royal Palace, now home to the National Art Gallery. We will then proceed to one of the city's more contentious sites: the Monument to the Soviet Army. This memorial has seen its fair share of protests and has been defaced with political messages over time.

Your tour will conclude around 7 pm at the monument commemorating the victims of Communism.
