Are you curious about the origin of the phrase "valer un potosí"? Join us on an excursion to Potosí, a city brimming with history that will unveil the story of this remarkable Bolivian imperial town!
Potosí Day Trip
This city was first referenced by Miguel de Cervantes in one of his literary works, popularizing the expression "vale un potosí" to highlight its wealth and luxurious attributes that emerged from this extraordinary location.
At the appointed time, we will collect you from your accommodation in Sucre and set off for Potosí, where you'll uncover the city's rich historical tapestry. While en route, take a moment to appreciate the stunning architecture of Sucre, including the iconic bridge that spans the Pilcomayo River, reminiscent of a medieval fortress.
Upon our arrival in Potosí, we will join our local guide to delve into this imperial town, which was once at the heart of the silver trade during the 16th and 17th centuries. The minerals extracted from the nearby Cerro Rico contributed to its status as one of the world's wealthiest cities for numerous years.
The well-preserved structures and monuments are a testament to this vibrant history: visit the Cathedral of Potosí, a Baroque marvel adorned with gold and silver relics, the Santa Teresa Museum, and the historic Casa de la Moneda (Mint). Established in the 18th century by Francisco de Toledo, Viceroy of Peru, this site reflects Potosí's significant economic legacy and its historical relevance.
As we explore, we will reveal the legends of the silver capital while wandering its storied streets. After the guided tour, you'll have some free time for lunch before we reunite for the return journey to Sucre. The excursion will conclude with a drop-off at your hotel, wrapping up an enriching 10-hour adventure.
