Hike on Vatnajökull Glacier

When you reserve your spot, you can choose between a 3-hour or a 5-hour trekking adventure:

3-Hour Trek

Your adventure begins in Skaftafell, where our knowledgeable guide will provide all the necessary gear to ensure a safe glacier hike. After receiving your helmet, harness, ice axe, and crampons, we will board a bus that transports us to the stunning Vatnajökull glacier.

Upon arrival, you’ll be captivated by the pristine beauty of this glacier, situated within the largest national park in Europe, widely recognized as one of the most picturesque locations. Its striking white landscapes have featured prominently in popular films and series, including James Bond, Tomb Raider, Batman, and Game of Thrones.

During our trek of approximately 60 to 90 minutes, you'll explore various glacier formations, including surface cracks, vertical wells, and ice tunnels (visible only in winter), creating an unforgettable experience immersed in Icelandic nature.

We will conclude the hike by returning to our starting location, reflecting on the extraordinary experience of traversing a glacier.

5-Hour Trek

The itinerary for this longer trek mirrors that of the 3-hour option, but we will spend more time engaged in the hiking activity. This option is designed for those who seek a true adventure!

Essential Information

The hikes are classified as medium difficulty across uneven terrain and are not advisable for individuals with heart conditions.On the 3-hour trek, expect to hike on the ice for around 1 hour.During the 5-hour trek, we will spend roughly 3 hours on the glacier, making it a longer and more challenging experience.For winter hikes, ensure you wear warm clothing and suitable footwear for snow and ice. In summer, a rain jacket is recommended. Technical gear required for the hike (helmet, crampons, and torch) will be provided. Year-round, sturdy hiking boots are essential. If you don’t have your own, you can rent them on-site for 25 EUR.
