Mondesa Guided Tour

At the scheduled time, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Swakopmund to commence the tour of the Mondesa neighbourhood. Throughout this tour, you will learn about the residents of this suburb and the effects of the apartheid regime on the community.

Mondesa served as the designated area for black citizens during the apartheid regime, while the wealthier white population dominated the city. Although the racial segregation system was officially abolished in 1991, traces of Mondesa's history can still be observed today.

You will navigate the streets of Mondesa and immerse yourself in its culture, engaging with locals and experiencing their culinary offerings. You may be invited to taste one of their artisan beers and traditional dishes, including mopane worms (caterpillars of the emperor butterfly), a local specialty. During the visit, you’ll be provided with some traditional snacks to fully engage with the culture.

Meeting the locals will offer you a genuine perspective on African culture and history. You will even have the opportunity to learn some words in the local language, khoe-khoe, as well as understand the significance of the term Ubuntu and its importance in African societies.
