Sicily’s Valley of the Temples and Roman Villa of Casale Excursion
Join us as we convene at the Taormina bus station to begin an enriching journey to the Valley of the Temples and the Roman Villa of Casale. Prepare for a day brimming with cultural and historical exploration!
Our adventure kicks off in Agrigento, where we will explore the Valley of the Temples, recognized as one of Italy’s finest preserved archaeological locations. This remarkable valley, adorned with Greek temples and rich narratives, earned its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
While here, we’ll visit notable sites, including the Temple of Juno alongside its remnants of a surrounding wall, and the exquisite Temple of Concordia, which also features the remnants of an early Christian burial site.
Next, we will proceed to the Temple of Heracles and the ruins of the famed Temple of Zeus, delving into significant figures of classical mythology that these sacred places were dedicated to. We'll culminate this part of the visit by admiring the enchanting Temples of Castor and Pollux, two breathtaking ruins poised to enchant every visitor.
At this point, you will have one hour of free time to enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries nearby. After lunch, we will resume our journey, continuing toward Piazza Armerina, nestled in the center of Sicily. On the edge of this town lies the Roman Villa of Casale.
This extraordinary site provides a fascinating insight into the opulent lifestyles of ancient Roman villas. The villa came to light thanks to Gino Vinicio Gentili, who led the excavations in the 1950s. Studies indicate that the structure suffered damage from the Normans and experienced destruction due to a mudslide from Mangone Mountain.
During our exploration, you’ll be amazed by the colorful mosaics that decorate the pathways. One particularly captivating mosaic illustrates a rare scene of women participating in sports from ancient times. We will take a moment to appreciate the portrayal of ten women involved in discus throwing and weightlifting. Quite an intriguing sight, wouldn’t you agree?
After a comprehensive 12-hour journey deep into the fascinating history of the Valley of the Temples and the Roman Villa of Casale, we will make our way back to the meeting point, concluding our enriching day.
