Private Tour of Taranto
Your experience begins at the appointed time, with your guide ready to meet you in Piazza Castello, the heart of Taranto, where many of the city's key landmarks are situated. Due to its unique geography, Taranto is often referred to as the City of Two Seas, nestled between the Mar Piccolo and Mar Grande. Are you prepared to delve into the past of this ancient Greek settlement established by Spartan settlers?
Our journey will commence with a visit to the impressive Doric columns of the Temple of Poseidon, which dates back to the 6th century BC and is regarded as the oldest temple in Magna Graecia. Moving forward to the Byzantine period, we will explore the Castello Aragonese, also known as Castel Sant'Angelo. This robust quadrilateral fortress currently serves as a base for the Navy.
Adjacent to this formidable structure, we will walk across the famous swing bridge of Taranto, a city symbol that connects the island of Borgo Antico and the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. Inaugurated in 1887, this stunning feat of engineering spans the navigable canal linking the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo.
Our next stop will be the Cathedral of San Cataldo, erected in the latter part of the 10th century by Byzantine hands. You will admire its Baroque façade, a product of renovations made during the 1700s, before stepping inside to view the exquisite mosaic floor and the Chapel of San Cataldo.
After two enriching hours spent exploring the city's architectural treasures, the private tour of Taranto will come to a close.
