This day excursion takes you to the impressive Katskhi Pillar, the intriguing town of Chiatura, and the Mghvimevi monastery, offering insights into the rich culture and historical context of Georgia, particularly its Soviet era.

Description

We will convene at the designated Traveler’s Meeting Point in Tbilisi to kick off our journey exploring notable examples of Soviet architecture in Georgia, such as Katskhi Pillar, Chiatura, and Mghvimevi monastery.

Our initial destination is Chiatura, renowned for its remarkable cable car network from the Soviet period, which has attracted various artists and photographers. Throughout our visit, we will uncover how Chiatura once served as a principal center for manganese extraction in the Caucasus.

Next, we will proceed to the stunning Mghvimevi monastery, which dramatically clings to a cliffside! We will ascend the stairs leading to the entrance to admire its exquisite stone carvings and historical relics. From the monastery, the panoramic view of Chiatura is nothing short of spectacular!

After our exploration of Mgvimevi, you will have a leisurely hour of free time to enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants in Chiatura. Once we are reenergized, we will set off to the renowned Katskhi Pillar — a remarkable church perched high where monks ascend! We will share fascinating stories about this limestone monolith and the Orthodox monastery that has been situated atop it since its establishment between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Of course, a visit to Chiatura wouldn’t be complete without experiencing one of its iconic cable cars! We will board this charming old transport system to glide up to the Pioneers Palace, taking in breathtaking views from above.

Ultimately, we will return to Tbilisi, wrapping up our enriching day after approximately 12 hours of exploration.
