Tour Details
At the appointed time we'll meet in front of the Electra Palace Thessaloniki hotel and from there we'll start our guided tour of Thessaloniki, the second most important city in Greece.
First up, we'll walk to the White Tower, the emblem of Thessaloniki. This building was part of the city wall, destroyed in 1866, serving as both a defensive tower and a prison.
Next, we'll see the equestrian statue of Alexander the Great, a tribute to the city's most famous historical figure, erected in 1973. This sculpture of the former King of Macedonia is 6 meters (19 feet) high on a 5-meter (15 feet) high marble pedestal.
After reviewing the history of this personage, we'll pass by the OTE Tower, a 76-metre (249 feet) high telecommunications building. We will discuss its significance while viewing the ruins of the Palace of Galerius, the Arch of Galerius, and the ancient Roman Forum.
Finally, we'll discover the Byzantine churches of the Acheiropoietos and San Demetrio, the latter part of the Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki and declared a World Heritage Site in 1988.
We'll conclude the tour 2 hours after the start of the activity at the starting point.
